Freud was not the one to ‘discover’ the unconscious, but he was the first to explore and understand the central role that the unconscious plays in human development and mental life. The unconscious was central to Freud’s model of the mind, which went through two significant theoretical phases: the topographical model of the mind, and later the structural model of the mind.
The topographical model of the mind
Freud initially understood the mind as having different functions, that are located in different places or topographies.
